The Islay Hotel
Background
The Island of Islay lies 20 miles off
the west coast of Scotland. At the south end of the island is Port
Ellen, a distilling and fishing village.
In 1888 this was a thriving Victorian
community boasting a newly built hotel - The Islay Hotel.
In 1989 the hotel closed and over time, became a ruin.
The Project
The old Islay Hotel
has now been demolished. Planning consents
and grant funding have been secured for the building of a new
hotel. Work has started and is now well underway. It
is planned to open in early 2009. The stone outbuildings in the courtyard
will be restored and we would also like to restore the two oil
paintings by Sean O'Leary which were rescued from the old hotel
before it was demolished.
Support
"Spot the
Whisky Barrel" is a prize competition
that has been designed to raise additional funding for this project.
We hope you will support us and
play
our competition.

We have already chosen a
name for the new hotel, and we thought it would be fun as part
of the competition to ask everyone who enters, to guess what
that name might be.
The prize for
guessing the right name of the new Islay Hotel will be one hogshead of mature cask strength Islay malt whisky, duty
paid, AND one week's accommodation for two at the new Islay
Hotel. The name is asked for on the entry form.
You never know... you might just
win!... and even if you don't, we look forward to giving you
your £25 back as a discount on your first stay at the hotel!
So, BEFORE you enter, think of a name!!
